When Should You Change Your Caravan Tyre?
Caravan Tyres should be checked before every trip. It is a legal requirement to ensure your caravan tyres are fit for the road and there are some essential checks that should be carried out:
- Tyre Tread: Check the tyre tread depth across the whole width of the tyre but in a minimum of 3 points. As caravans can be subject to uneven loading, tyre wear can occur in various places across the tyre. The inside edge of the tyre is particularly vulnerable. The minimum grove depth should be 1.6mm.
- Buldges, Cracking or Deterioration: Check for visible signs of damage on both the tyre wall or tread. This includes cracking, buldges or general deterioration. Inactive periods of use and tyres subjected to long periods of UV or oxidation in the same location can actually lead to premature ageing.
- Age: Caravan Tyres should be changed at 5 years old regardless of use. As mentioned above, tyres degrade regardless of use and most insurers won’t cover you should you have an accident such as a blow out.
How To Find The Age Of A Tyre
Finding out the age of a tyre is simple when you know what to look for. Inspect the tyre wall and look for a 4 digit number. It will usually be DOT (Department Of Transport) followed by a group of numbers. The first 2 digits are the week (01 to 52) and the last 2 digits are the year.
For example: a code ending in 2020 means the tyre was manufactured in the 20th week of 2020.

How Much Will It Cost To Replace A Caravan Tyre?
The cost of replacing a caravan tyre varies based on the type and size of the tyre. For example: a standard non C rated 175/65 R14 with a load rating of 82 (475kg per tyre) expect to pay approximately £145.00 for a budget tyre installed. The same spec of premium tyre should be in the region of £190.00 installed. Non C rated tyres are often only found on twin axle caravans.
C rated (Commercial) specific caravan tyres with the same spec, but with a higher load rating (90/88T) are approximately £155 / £165 per budget tyre installed. Premium tyres from brands such as Falken and Michellin cost in the region of £200 / £210 installed.
